What's your opinion about purchasing Apple & Android smart devices?

If you have a high portion of mobile users whose devices are purchased through SVM or are mostly or partly reimbursed and whose mobile service is under a corporate contract (CLU) or not under a corporate contract but is reimbursed (ILU), how do you handle requests for iPhones, iPads -- and other smart devices?
We recently reviewed 235 IT client inquiries about mobility [see our upcoming report, "Inquiry Spotlight: Enterprise Mobility Sourcing And Planning, 2010-H1 2011"], but
we NEED your opinon too! We learned that most firms will likely NOT be buying iPhones and iPads en masse to the resounding cheers of employees. However, consumerization is really pushing tech-savvy type-A employees to buy their own and use them for work - directly or indirectly paid for by the company (swapping the SIM plus ActiveSync).
(It IS Apple - everyone has an opinion on this surely, so please weigh in on our discussion!)
Do you have ideas to share with the SVM community about:
a) understanding the needs of the different user groups and how to help lines-of-business address them without radically increasing costs?
b) working with Enterprise Architects and the business to develop adoption guardrails?
c) working with Security & Risk and also Infrastructure & Operations groups to develop risk assessments for personal devices (Apple, Android)
My sense is that corproate liable smartphones will be disappearing over the next few years, replaced by reimbursement and some type of virtual private communications software installed on the device, likley at corporate expense. We still have corporate owned devices in our environment (Blackberry only for smartphones), but we are also using software from Good to do the virtual private communication on employee-owned iPhones, Android devices and iPads. I believe this BYOD will happen more quickly for phones and tablets than for PCs. This may be only a correlation though as we are also likley heading for a time when not everyone in the corporation will even have a PC.
