Thus far, checking in from real-world locations has been an activity reserved for early adopters, but this behavior is growing, being spurred on by innovation from Foursquare and Facebook. Will this be the “hockey stick” year for Foursquare, where growth kicks into hyperdrive? Or will Facebook roll over Foursquare as they did MySpace? And what will it take to hook the masses in the check-in craze?
To be specific here, we're asking about location-based social networks since services includes things like GPS-assisted mapping which is already widely used. Perhaps by 2011 we'll have come up with a shorter name than Location-based social networks? It's a bit long for me!

Since we are talking about specific location-basd social networks. I am hoping to see that 2011 we will have much precise "check-in" than what we have today. One of the issues i have today is the proximity check-in. I can very well be in the parking lot of a mall and still check-in to multiple stores and gain points. As a store i am not seeing the real foot traffic in my store. I would like to hear from my fellow commrades if they see the same issue.
More precise check-ins would be great. More precise locations would also be nice. I was in the airport the other day and I saw a number of duplicate locations. There were two baggage claim carrousel fives for example. Thank goodness I was picking up a carrousel four or I would have had an existential check-in melt down!
What else will fuel this growth? Augie just posted a great blog post about Gap's recent coupon offer with Facebook places. Do you think incentives like this will help or hurt adoption?
